Reason for Policy

The purpose of this policy is to outline who is eligible to serve as a Principal Investigator on an IACUC protocol.

Policy Statement

Background:

Dartmouth College is committed to the humane and judicious use of animals in research, testing and teaching. Because of the responsibility associated with serving as a Principal Investigator on an Animal Care and Use protocol Dartmouth requires that only certain individuals may serve in this capacity.

Eligible Individuals:

Faculty and staff with the following appointments are eligible to serve as Principal Investigators:

  • Professor or Research Professor
  • Associate or Research Associate Professor
  • Assistant or Research Assistant Professor
  • Instructor
  • Attending Veterinarian

Individuals not meeting the above requirements may be listed as a Co-PI on a protocol with an eligible individual but the responsibility for management and adherence to the protocol is still the responsibility of the eligible PI. Individuals who wish to submit a protocol for review by the IACUC must obtain an exemption from the PI Eligibility policy by contacting the IACUC.
